MIA ZABELKA – PHOTO-TONE

Austrian composer, violinist and sound artist Mia Zabelka works at the intersection of music, physics, biology and technology. Her art makes the invisible audible. In her project PHOTO-TONE, microscopic processes — atomic motion, molecular interaction, energetic exchange — are translated into sound. What normally remains hidden within matter is given a voice. Listening becomes a way of perceiving beyond the human scale.

For Mia Zabelka, sound is not merely an artistic medium; it is a fundamental principle of existence. Vibration, resonance and frequency shape both nature and technology. By rendering these vibrations audible, she reveals the shared foundations of humans, matter and machines.

Her performances combine microtonality, noise textures, drones and extended violin techniques — what she calls automatic playing — with voice, real-time electronics, digital interfaces and prepared objects. The boundaries between composition, improvisation and sound art dissolve. The result is an immersive listening experience where physicality and technology co-create the sonic field.

In PHOTO-TONE, subatomic worlds become audible. Oscillations, collisions and energetic condensations take acoustic form. Scientific models enter into dialogue with visionary imagination. The audience is not a distant observer, but part of a resonant environment where perception itself becomes participation.
